Fusion 90Science: The Gatekeeper of Life
Topic: Cell Biology - Cell Membrane & Selective Permeability
Grade: 5-6

The next step:

Scientists discovered that a cell survives because its membrane controls what is allowed to enter and what stays out.

Everything changed when scientists realized that the membrane wasn't simply a wall. It was selectively controlling what crossed it.

NO BOUNDARY, OR ALL OR NOTHING.

Sometimes we're afraid to set boundaries, so we let everything in. Other times, we set a boundary and shut everything out.

SET THE BOUNDARY. CHOOSE WHAT GETS THROUGH.

You can set a boundary and still choose what to let in, and what to keep out.

Breaking the pattern is how students put Future Skills and Life Skills into action.

Future Skill: Agency, Self-Management
Life Skill: Setting Boundaries

Future Skills help us prepare for the future.
Life Skills help us use them in everyday life.

CRACK THE CODE!

Time: 90 seconds
Format: Pairs / Whole Class
Materials: None

Crack the code: find a rule that reveals the hidden word. What is the hidden word?

THE SECRET WAS FILTERING!

The rule: only the blue letters are relevant. The word is filtering.

In the cell membrane story and the code-breaking game, what helped achieve the desired result?

FILTERING!

In the cell membrane story, filtering controlled what could enter or leave the cell.

In the game, filtering revealed the hidden word.

Life works that way too.

Setting boundaries is a form of filtering. Instead of letting everything in or shutting everything out, you set a boundary and choose what to let in, and what to keep out.

SET THE BOUNDARY. CHOOSE WHAT GETS THROUGH.

AUTOMATIC PATTERN

NO BOUNDARY, OR ALL OR NOTHING.

Sometimes we're afraid to set boundaries, so we let everything in. Other times, we set a boundary and shut everything out.

PATTERN BREAK

SET THE BOUNDARY. CHOOSE WHAT GETS THROUGH.

You can set a boundary and still choose what to let in, and what to keep out.

Think of a time when you had to set a boundary with someone. What made you realize that boundary was needed?

Where might you need to set a clearer boundary this week?
